Esmalte ou verniz de unha não tem uma data certa de criação. As mulheres do antigo Egito já pintavam as unhas de preto, antes de Cristo. Na China e no Império Romano as unhas também eram muito valorizadas. No século XIX, unhas pequenas eram sinal de elegância. Em 1830 foi criado o primeiro instrumento de manicure, e com este poderia-se empurrar a cutícula. Os primeiros institutos de beleza surgiram em 1892. Na década de 30, mulheres pintavam suas unhas apenas no centro e faziam uma meia lua nas pontas com lápis branco. Em 1932 surge a revolucionária empresa de cosméticos Revlon, criada pelos irmãos americanos Charles e Joseph Revson. Foram eles que criaram o primeiro esmalte que era aplicado em toda a unha. Porém, o conceito de combinar cor do esmalte com o batom foi inventado pela empresa rival, a Cutex. Nos anos 70 surgem os esmaltes sintéticos. No Brasil, há atualmente cerca de 30 marcas nacionais de esmaltes.

In 1830 the first manicure tool was created, and it served to push the cuticles. The earliest beauty parlours opened in 1892. In the 30s, women used to paint their nail only in the centre and they also used to make a half moon on the tips of it with white pencil. In 1932 it was created the revolucionary cosmetics company Revlon by the American siblings Charles and Joseph Revson. It was they who created the first nail varnish that was applied across the nail. But the concept of matching the nail varnish's colour with the lipstick's wasn't created by them. It was created by the rival company, Cutex. In the 70s emerged the synthetic nail polish.
